Inaugural Bull City 5k Diabetes Walk/Run
Empower Your Body
The Beta Phi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated, in partnership with Uplift Project Inc.
(UPI), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, will be hosting our 2nd Annual Bull City 5k Diabetes Walk/Run on
September 7, 2024. Last year, we had over 250 participants across North Carolina, South Carolina, and
Virginia. This event was the first race held in Durham, highlighting Diabetes Awareness. Thanks to our
inaugural sponsors, Duke University, North Carolina Central University, Durham Technical Community
College, United Therapeutics, M&F Bank, Fusion Integrated Solutions, Sam’s Club, and many small
businesses and organizations surrounding Durham, it was a huge success. We would greatly appreciate
your sponsorship to continue this community event.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, diabetes is the seventh leading cause of
death in the United States. In the last twenty years, the number of adults diagnosed with diabetes has more
than doubled. Participants will join hundreds of community members, affiliates, friends, and family for a
leisurely or competitive run along parts of the beautiful American Tobacco Trail and Downtown Durham
on a USA Track and Field Certified 5k Course. However, USA Track and Field has not sanctioned this
event at this time.
The start and finish line will be the Blackwell and Willard Streets intersection near the Durham Bulls
Stadium in Durham beginning at 8 am on September 7, 2024. In addition to the race, participants can
enjoy line dancing, yoga, and other family-friendly activities that will keep their hearts pumping, keep
Durham moving toward a healthier lifestyle, and close the health disparities gap. All proceeds will
support the American Diabetes Association, diabetes education, and other health awareness programs
benefiting Durham families. Online registration is open and will include a t-shirt, medal, and bib. There is
no virtual participation at this time.
The Beta Phi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated, continues to be instrumental in shaping
Durham since its charter in 1924. Beta Phi is known throughout Durham for its long, rich, and storied
history. Countless Durham leaders in business, finance, politics, education, activism, religion,
entrepreneurship, and youth programs have been members of our chapter, then and now. It is a tradition
of which we are justifiably proud as we celebrate 100 years of service to Durham County by hosting the
Bull City 5k Diabetes Walk/Run in conjunction with our centennial celebration.
Uplift Project Inc. (UPI) is a 501(c)(3) organization formed in 2002. UPI’s mission is to prepare today for
tomorrow’s success through social action and youth initiatives involving education and character
improvement, public awareness forums on social, economic, and health-related issues, and minority
community development.
